December works update for Y Muni redevelopment

December works update for Y Muni redevelopment

The Council has provided a progress report on the major ongoing scheme to redevelop the Muni Arts Centre (Y Muni) in Pontypridd.

Work on the building, in partnership with Awen Cultural Trust, started in September – to reopen Y Muni next year as a multi-purpose and fully accessible events hub.

The redevelopment will repair and conserve the 1890s building, with the project designed to expose elements of its stunning Gothic architecture.

The internal strip of the building, which includes some demolition work, continues to progress well – across the lobby area, ground floor, first floor and staircases.

Scaffolding has recently been installed in the main auditorium area to access the ceiling as part of the internal strip.

Externally, the site hoardings and scaffolding were previously installed, and important progress has been made with several elements of the building exterior.

This has included trays installed to the roof’s rear elevation, which will support new integrated photovoltaic (solar electricity) panels.

Stonework repairs have also started to the building’s tower, while stonework cleaning across the building exterior is progressing.

The images show windows being exposed inside the auditorium (top left), progress on the first-floor strip (top right), the external scaffold (bottom left) and the internal auditorium scaffold (bottom right).

This project is being delivered using Taxpayer’s money £5.3m UK Government Levelling Up funding secured by the Council.

The Council will continue to provide project updates regularly as the works progress throughout 2024.
