Labour Welsh Government misled families over maternity service review

Labour Welsh Government misled families over maternity service review

Following an ITV This Week documentary highlighting Swansea Bay Health Board maternity service concerns in October, FOIs and internal Welsh Government emails have revealed that a review into the service did not take place, despite previous responses from the Labour Welsh Government to the contrary.

Commenting following his spokesperson’s questions in the Welsh Parliament to the Labour Health Minister, Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister, Russell George MS said:

“In September this year, the Labour Welsh Government claimed in response to questions surrounding Swansea Bay University Health Board’s maternity services that there were ‘no immediate concerns’ based on a review that we now know never even took place.

“With the Channon family represented in the gallery above, I asked the Labour Health Minister whether her government had misled affected families and the media surrounding Swansea Bay maternity issues and whether those services are now safe for patients. The Labour Minister failed to answer or even confirm whether she thinks the service is safe.

“There are still around 300 ongoing investigations into Swansea Bay maternity cases. The Welsh Conservatives are calling for a full independent review into the service to give families the answers they deserve.”
