A third of consultants missing from Welsh A&Es while bed shortages continue to grow

Commenting on his exchange with the First Minister at FMQs today, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies MS said:

Labour has been running the Welsh NHS for the last 26 years and only they are accountable for stripping away more than 1,000 beds over the last decade alone.

“It is alarming that 14% of people wait over 12 hours for emergency care, exposing Labour’s careless approach to this critical service. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine has highlighted the growing crisis in emergency care consultancy as Wales has only 100 consultants of the baseline 178 that are needed.

“Back in 2021 we highlighted that not a single hospital in Wales met the RCEM’s minimum staffing levels and that is still the case today. Labour has fundamentally failed to attract consultants to Wales.

“To make matters worse, Mark Drakeford and his Labour government are cutting the Welsh NHS budget in real terms – the only government in the UK to cut an NHS budget, yet Labour have done it twice in Wales.

“We have a plan to get more doctors and nurse into our Welsh NHS by paying the tuition fees for those who stay to work in Wales for five years and we would reverse Labour’s NHS cuts making sure we get the healthcare we all deserve.”
