Labour procurement card U-turn
The Labour Government has announced it will now publish its procurement card data quarterly, instead of yearly, following revelations found by the Welsh Conservatives in the Labour Government’s procurement card data. This included £8,000 spent in a Mediterranean Manhattan restaurant, £5,000 on the ‘best Steak in New York’ and £3000 on a five-star hotel meal in India.
The 2021-22 procurement card data, which was released in May of this year, was not only released later than ever before, but was also released after Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies MS was told in a written question to the First Minster that it would be released in April.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance, Peter Fox MS said:
“We welcome the news that the Labour Government have decided that they’ll publish their procurement card data quarterly. With the 2021-22 data released in May 2023, we had to wait 15 months for this to be released, showing a complete lack of transparency and honesty.
“While this news is welcome, the UK Government continues to publish their procurement card data monthly, yet Labour will continue to try to hide and delay scrutiny that the UK Conservative Government welcomes.
“It’s clear that this procurement card U-turn has come following Welsh Conservative pressure. As Welsh Conservatives, we will always ensure that the Labour Government is made accountable with taxpayers’ money.”
