Following the news that the majority of Labour councils across Wales could be plotting to scrap the council tax discount for households that are single-person occupied, Shadow Minister for Local Government, Sam Rowlands MS said:
“Labour could be attempting to extract money from people with the least financial security, all whilst their councils are hoarding over £2.75 billion in useable reserves.
“If the single person discount is not preserved, widows and single-parent households will be significantly impacted, with their council tax going up by 33% if Labour pursues this preposterous proposal.
“This additional 33% council tax rise is especially senseless when councils across Wales have already hiked council tax this financial year, a year in which families across Wales are dealing with cost-of-living challenges.
