NHS Wales Executive should be independent

Commenting on the announcement that the NHS Wales Executive will come into force tomorrow, Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister Russell George MS is calling on the Welsh Government make the organisation independent of government. He said:

“This is just another layer of bureaucracy for our Welsh NHS. To really solve the problems that people face we need an independent Welsh NHS Executive that can challenge the Welsh Government behinds the scenes and publicly.

“Whilst the Director General for health in the Welsh Government and the Chief Executive of NHS Wales are the same person, how can patients trust that the issues that need resolving are going to be.

“It’s like someone marking their own homework but advising the teacher in the first place on what it should be. What Wales needs is a Welsh NHS executive truly independent from Welsh Government.”
