High Sheriff Award for Cynon Macmillan Local Heroes
The Macmillan Cynon Valley Committee were recently presented with a community award
by the High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan Maria K. Thomas in recognition of their dedication,
commitment and valuable services to their community,
This fundraising committee have supported Macmillan Cancer Support for more than
30years and in that time have raised over £1million to help support people living with cancer
and their families in their community.
The Committee have helped raise money to help build the Macmillan Unit at the Prince
Charles Hospital in Merthyr which opened in June 2010, and continue to tirelessly
fundraise to fund the nurses, health professionals and information and support coordinators,
as well as benefits advisers.
Presenting the award, High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan Maria Thomas said, “The Cynon Valley
Macmillan Fundraising committee has tirelessly raised over one million pounds for services
much needed for those who are diagnosed with cancer in the Cynon Valley. Their volunteers
are committed, dedicated individuals who started fundraising over 30 years ago. Humbled to
meet them today and to recognise their volunteering work by awarding them the High Sheriff
Award”
Relationship Fundraising Manager in Wales, Nicola Newhams, added: “I am delighted that
the committee have been recognised in this special way, we simply couldn’t do what we do
without this incredible group of dedicated volunteers and we are so grateful for their
continued support”.
