Following the recent discovery of Rishi Sunak not wearing a seatbelt while in a moving vehicle, RoSPA has issued the following statement:

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, who lobbied for the mandatory use of seatbelts nearly 40 years ago, said:

“As a charity recognised for its century-long interest in road safety, RoSPA spearheaded the campaign for the mandatory use of seatbelts. When introduced in 1981, seatbelt legislation immediately reduced passenger and driver deaths by 29%. Forty years on, RoSPA estimates that seatbelts save the lives of around 7,000 of people per year across Europe.

“Government statistics show that around a quarter of car occupant fatalities in 2020 weren’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, highlighting that everyone should take seatbelt laws seriously – whoever and wherever they are.”
