A4059 drainage improvements between Penywaun and Trecynon

The Council will begin a significant drainage improvement scheme on the A4059 between Penywaun and Trecynon from January 4 – requiring temporary traffic lights on this section of road to safely carry out the work.

The scheme is being delivered over a 400m section of the Aberdare Bypass, between Penywaun and Harriet Street roundabouts, to address a drainage issue at this location. The work will see a drainage filter/carrier drain installed, to increase the road’s resilience to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

The work is being funded by Welsh Government’s Resilient Roads Fund and will be carried out by the Council over six weeks, subject to fair weather. Temporary traffic lights will be required for the duration of the scheme – avoiding the morning and afternoon peak travel periods where possible.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “This upcoming scheme in the Cynon Valley is the latest example of the Council utilising Resilient Roads funding to undertake local improvements – with the fund allocated in June to help Local Authorities adapt to climate change and address issues brought by heavy rain on strategic routes.

“The Aberdare Bypass scheme follows work to reduce standing water on a section of the A4059 between Mountain Ash and Abercynon, drainage improvements on Porth Relief Road at Ynyshir, and filter drain replacements at Mynydd yr Eos in Penygraig – all completed in recent months. A separate scheme on the A4059 at Canal Road in Cwmbach will also start in January.

“Temporary traffic lights will be required on the A4059 between Penywaun and Trecynon, in order to safely carry out important drainage improvements – which will address an existing issue with standing water at this location. I’d like to thank residents and road users in advance for their cooperation.”
