Drainage improvements off Llanwonno Road in Mountain Ash
The Council will undertake important drainage improvements off Llanwonno Road in Mountain Ash, to reduce the risk of flooding to local properties.
From Monday, February 17, the Council will start work within a lane where Llanwonno Road meets Cilhaul Terrace, at a location near Llanwonno villas. The scheme will replace and upgrade an existing ordinary watercourse to help alleviate the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. A new culvert network will be installed to replace the current defective system.
Works will also include the installation of filter drains within the lane, to reduce the impact of groundwater flooding for the benefit of local residents.
The Council has secured a significant 85% contribution towards the cost of this £50,000 scheme from Welsh Government, awarded for 2019/20. The remainder of the cost will be provided by #RCTinvest funding.
The scheme is anticipated to be completed with minimal disruption to the local community. However access within the lane, which is located at a point where Llanwonno Road meets Cilhaul Terrace, will be removed during the works. The scheme is scheduled to be completed during March 2020.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “Reducing flood risk in local communities is an important priority for the Council. Our repair and improvement schemes target locations with a greater risk of flooding – and £550,000 to tackle Flood Drainage and Risk Management was included in our £25.9m Highways and Transportation Capital Programme in 2019/20.
“It is also important to secure external funding to complement our own efforts through #RCTinvest – as we welcome an 85% contribution for the upcoming scheme in Mountain Ash, along with recently-announced culvert repairs in Pentre. Both schemes begin on Monday and will be completed next month.
“A number of flood alleviation schemes which started before Christmas have also recently been completed – at A4061 Rhigos Road, Maesyffynnon Lane/Cardiff Road in Aberdare, and Cardiff Road/Dyffryn Road in Rhydyfelin.
“The upcoming scheme off Llanwonno Road in Mountain Ash is not anticipated to cause major disruption to residents and road users, and will introduce important drainage measures for the benefit of the community.”
