PONTYPRIDD CONSTITUENCY’S COMMUNITY SPIRIT STILL STRONG, DESPITE FLOODING AND CORONAVIRUS
Despite the flooding and the Coronavirus crisis, the community spirit of Pontypridd is stronger than ever according to Plaid Cymru’s councillors.
All three county councillors have been busy working alongside volunteers to support those who are sheltering or self-isolating in their wards, as well as offering advice and support to both residents and businesses.
Cllr Eleri Griffiths and Cllr Heledd Fychan have also been supporting the residents and businesses in their wards that were recently affected by the floods, ensuring that they receive all the financial and practical support that is available to them.
They would like to send their good wishes to those from the area who are in hospital fighting the virus presently and thank all the workers who continue to work every day to support our community.
Councillor for Pontypridd Town Heledd Fychan said:
“The Coronavirus has been a cruel blow to Pontypridd residents and businesses, coming so soon after the devastating floods.
“It is crucial that flood victims are not forgotten in all of this, and that the promises of support made by the Welsh Government are honoured.
“However, despite the difficulties, the community spirit and support networks are stronger than ever, and there is a greater appreciation for our town’s businesses as they adapt and offer new services.
“I hope that those who have re-discovered our local businesses will continue to support them in the future, to secure the future of our town and the businesses that have proved vital for us at this time.”
Eleri Griffiths, the Rhondda Ward Councillor commented:
“Residents of the Rhondda Ward have been busy supporting their neighbours in the area, by shopping for them and collecting prescriptions. As one of the volunteer coordinators, I would like to thank everyone who has been part of this work.
“I have also been responding to a number of queries from local businesses and providing them with advice and information about the services available from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council as well as ensuring that support for the residents of Trehafod following the floods continues.”
Tonyrefail East Councillor Danny Grehan added:
“There are now over a thousand Tonyrefail residents registered on a Facebook page I recently set up to support those who are self-isolating or sheltering during Covid-19. Someone posts to say that they are on their way to the pharmacy, or on their way to the shop, offering to save a journey out of the house for someone else. We all support each other.
“I have been contacted by social services asking if we could help vulnerable families, and the community has responded. I try to keep support as close as possible to the people in need.
“Another bonus that has come from this is the use of the small local shops; the fruit shop and the butchers in Tonyrefail have been busier than ever. Let’s hope that many people will continue to use them after all this passes.”
