Rhondda Cynon Taf Council continues to monitor culverts as a priority issue. Do they?
The Council will shortly begin a scheme to undertake significant repairs to a culvert located beneath Heol Pendarren in Rhigos.
The scheme will take place at the Gwrangon culvert where Heol Pendarren travels above a stream – a short distance from the entrance to the Min Afon housing estate. Work begins on Monday, September 16, and is scheduled to last approximately two months. Centre Great have been appointed by the Council as the contractor responsible for delivering this scheme.
The work will involve concrete repairs to the under-side of the culvert, along with masonry repairs to the structure’s original arch section.
There are currently concrete barriers restricting traffic to one lane on this section of Heol Pendarren, over the culvert structure. These will remain in place for the duration of the scheme – and will be removed when all works are complete.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “The Council continues to monitor culverts as a priority issue, to alleviate flood risk in our communities. The £25.9m Highways Capital Programme for 2019/20 includes a £550,000 investment for Flood Drainage and Flood Risk Management – while further funding has also been dedicated within our 2019/20 budget for Highways Structures for repair and replacement schemes.
“In April 2019, the Council announced culvert repair schemes in Treherbert, Cwmpennar, Hendeforgan, Gilfach Goch and Ynysybwl – and these followed significant flood alleviation schemes at Park Road in Cwmparc, Bronallt Terrace in Abercwmboi and at the Trem-y-Dyffryn estate in Mountain Ash.
“The Council will also be undertaking a culvert replacement near Hirwaun Recreation Ground, starting on September 16 – and this will be followed by a similar scheme at the Blaennant-y-Groes culvert in Cwmbach later this year.
“The upcoming work in Rhigos will last approximately two months, and the existing lane closure will end once the work is complete. The Council will work closely with its contractor to complete this scheme as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
