12 new homes completed in Aberdare town centre
A derelict, Grade II-listed building in Aberdare has been transformed into affordable apartments.
Trivallis, a registered social landlord based in RCT, has developed 12, affordable, one- and two-bedroom apartments in what was formerly the Boot Hotel public house in Aberdare town centre.
The £1.1m redevelopment is the first project in Aberdare town centre for Trivallis, seeing the transformation of a building that was built around 1900 and had been derelict for many years.
All 12 of the new homes at Cwrt Y Esgid, as the building is now named, have been let with tenants moving in the week that handover was completed (w/c 12th August 2019).
Sarah Kirton, Development Manager at Trivallis, said: “We have worked with constructors TEDs Developments and obtained social housing grant funding from Welsh Government to complete these homes. The social housing grant helps social housing providers like Trivallis to increase the supply of affordable rented housing and improve communities, which is exactly what this scheme has achieved.
“The mix of one and two bed apartments have been designed and developed in partnership with the Local Authority and ensure that we maintain the character of a listed building, whilst also providing homes for single occupants, couples and families alike.
“Trivallis is proud to be increasing the number of homes it develops supporting Welsh Government and the Local Authority to respond to the current housing crisis.”
Work to the building involved reinstating its traditional features such as hardwood sliding sash windows, doors, cast iron guttering and down pipes, chimney stacks, a natural slate roof and repairs to the masonry.
“We wanted to do our very best to make sure we did a great job of bringing this iconic Aberdare building back to life. It has been challenging at times, but we have worked with the Local Authority and the community to ensure that disruption has been kept to a minimum and we are pleased to say that the handover occurred within the contract period.” Sarah added.
Trivallis is also refurbishing the former Black Lion and Exchange in Aberdare town centre. This scheme will consist of retail space on the ground floor with 18, one – and two – bedroom affordable rent apartments created above.
