Davies writes to First Minister calling for urgent decision on Barry Incinerator

Shadow Environment Minister and South Wales Central AM, Andrew RT Davies, has written to the First Minister calling on him to intervene and make an urgent decision on the environmental impact assessment for Barry Incinerator.

In February 2018, Labour’s Environment Minister, Hannah Blythyn AM, claimed the Welsh Government was minded to order an EIA for the Biomass plant. However, 15 months on and residents in Barry are still waiting for the Labour-run administration in Cardiff Bay to make a decision.

Following the Welsh Government’s declaration of a ‘climate emergency’ last week, Andrew RT Davies has called on the First Minister to get a handle on the situation and he once again raised the issue in this week’s Business Statement in the Assembly.

Commenting on the letter to the First Minister, Andrew RT said:

“It’s now 15 months and counting since the Welsh Labour Government stated it was minded to order an environmental impact assessment for the Barry Incinerator, and the unacceptable wait only goes on.

“There is now a real sense of despair and disbelief at the manner with which the Labour Minister is handling this situation and it’s time the First Minister intervened and got a handle on the situation.

“Last week the Welsh Labour Government declared a ‘climate emergency’ but yet they can’t even make one simple decision when it comes to a biomass plant in Barry! Sadly, once again, when it matters, Labour are all talk, and no action.

“Barry residents are rightly angry and frustrated at the delay and there has been an alarming lack of leadership and transparency from the Welsh Labour Government – a decision must now be made as a matter of urgency.”
