Abacare supports nursing cadet scheme backed by Prince of Wales

AN AWARD-WINNING care agency in Wales is supporting a new nursing cadet scheme launched by the Royal College of Nurses (RCN) and backed by the Prince of Wales (February, 2019).

Abacare says the scheme, which is being trialled in Wales in partnership with the Wales Army Cadet Force, is a step in the right direction as it is trying to attract young people to the care industry.

Peter Angelides, Managing Director at Abacare, which provides care across Wales, said: “It is great news to hear about the pilot initiative aimed at widening access to the nursing profession. Once cadets have completed the scheme they will be offered a guaranteed interview for a nursing degree programme in Wales.

“Younger people are particularly difficult to attract in the care industry, so this is a fantastic initiative for young caring individuals to build a career for themselves.

“We are regularly recruiting and many people who train as nurses go on to have careers in the care industry with companies like ours, providing a life-changing service to the elderly and vulnerable. We would love to hear from anyone interested in working with us once they’ve completed their degree programme.”

The course will be delivered in association with Neath and Port Talbot College Group.

Dame Professor Donna Kinnair, Acting RCN Chief Executive, said on the RCN’s website: “We hope this will prove to be an effective way to raise the profile of nursing and attract more young people into the profession.”

Abacare operates a professional Care Management Team that is committed to providing high quality care to individuals in their own homes.

The large team of trained, specialist, care workers provide positive based outcomes and person-centred care to people throughout Wales.

Peter added: “We offer a competitive salary, full free training, travel time for walkers and drivers, mileage payments, consistent hours and runs, a refer a friend scheme and national discount scheme for major brands.

“We also offer the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF), formerly known as National Vocational Qualifications, to all our team members who show commitment, reliability and true passion. We provide a great support network for all of our carers.

“New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for all major brands as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.

“Being a carer is an extremely rewarding job and you get to meet lots of wonderful people too.”

Abacare’s core values, instilled into every staff member, include ‘make us proud’, ‘focus on our service users’ wellbeing’, ‘communicate, listen well and speak with respect’, ‘be passionate, honest, caring and considerate’, ‘recruit and develop the very best’ and ‘lead by example’.

It believes it offers inspiring work for inspirational people.
