St John Baptist took part in a girls’ 5 a side Girls’ football tournament

On Wednesday, December 12th 2018, St John Baptist took part in a girls' 5 a side football tournament called the 'WSFA National Fives' in Whitchurch, Cardiff. The team was made up of both year 7 and 8 females. The team consisted of: Mycah, Verity, Tia, Madison, Carys, Jess, Natalie, Lauren and Madison.

The girls competed in Group C initially with opponents including. Rhydywaun, Plasmawr B and Cwmtawe. The girls were the first up in the group and needed to get off to a flying start to build confidence and set the marker. They certainly did that with a 4-0 victory over Rhydywaun. The defence was excellent and some superb goals were scored by the team. The girls continued to dominate in their second game against Plasmawr B with a 3-1 victory, however, they faced a sterner challenge in Cwmtawe who defeated St Johns 4-1.

Nevertheless, the results were still good enough to take the girls into the top end of the draw to challenge for the Trophy. Their new opponents in the Trophy group C were Idris Davies, Caerleon and Plasmawr A. Idris Davies were an even match as the game ended in a 3-3 draw. It meant the next two games meant even more. The team performed very well to come back from behind to beat Caerleon 5-3. But the final group game against Plasmawr A proved too much as the team lost 5-2.

As a result, the girls were eliminated from the knockout tournament. Despite this, the girls performed fantastically with all members making a valuable contribution to their school. Lauren was an outstanding performer, being nominated by other coaches as Female of the Match.

Well done St John's!
