SSD 2017-18 annual report published


Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) has published its 2017-18 annual report, outlining its work throughout the previous year.

The 2017-18 annual report shows CIW regulated 5,968 services providing 111,557 places, and carried out 2,955 inspections across adult and children’s services, and childcare and play.

The inspectorate dealt with 5,010 changes to services’ registrations and ways of working and received 35,937 notifications from services. CIW received 3,419 concerns about services across Wales.

CIW continued to prepare for the implementation of the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016, which places accountability for the quality of care firmly at the highest level within organisations. Inspectors talked to and worked with staff, providers and stakeholders to help shape and develop new approaches in line with the 2016 Act.

The inspectorate continued to prepare for the publication of ratings in its childcare and play inspection reports, and carried out detailed planning with Estyn ahead of a programme of joint inspections of non-maintained settings.

The inspectorate moved from a regional to a national approach in November 2017, and automated the publication of inspection reports on its website, enabling people to see the most up-to-date information.

“2017-18 has been a year of significant change to ensure we are ready to meet future challenges. Our aspiration is to achieve the highest possible standards and help improve outcomes for the most vulnerable people in our society.”
