Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) Annual Report published

HIW have today published their first annual report on their activities and enforcement under the Ionising Radiation
(Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R)
We are responsible for monitoring compliance with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IRMER) to ensure that patients are protected when having treatment that requires exposure to ionising radiation.

We do this by assessing and inspecting clinical departments that use ionising radiation. We also review reported incidents where patients have been exposed to a greater amount of radiation than intended.

This is the first time we have published an annual report on our regulatory activities for  IR(ME)R. In 2014-15 we inspected four health board across Wales in 2014-15 and visited radiology departments in seven hospitals.

Each inspection considered:

  • Compliance with IR(ME)R
  • Quality of patient experience
  • Staffing, management and leadership
  • Delivery of a safe, effective service.

We also reviewed the 46 notifications we received in 2014-15 where patients had been exposed to a greater amount of ionising radiation than required.

You can read the findings from this in the full report that is available to download below.
