Re-surfacing works on the A4059 at Cwmbach
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will carry out resurfacing works on the A4059 at Cwmbach in its latest project to improve the Cynon Valley corridor for the benefit of road users.
The works will see Cwmbach roundabout re-surfaced, along with the section of the A4059 between the Cwmbach and Asda roundabouts. It follows works to re-surface and widen the Canal Road approaches to Cwmbach roundabout in summer 2017, and the installation of right turn lanes off the A4059 at the Gulf Petrol Station in Cwmbach, which was completed in November 2017.
Thanks to significant Council investment over the last two years, the wider A4059 corridor has seen a number of schemes completed to improve traffic flow. They include new dedicated turn lanes being introduced at the Ynys and Asda roundabouts, and off the A4059 at Mountain Ash.
The works in Cwmbach are scheduled to begin on Monday, March 12, and end on Sunday, March 18. They will require the section of the A4059 between the Asda and Cwmbach roundabouts to temporarily close – but Cwmbach roundabout will remain open via its Canal Road accesses.
Access will be maintained for pedestrians, emergency service vehicles and school buses for the duration of the works.
An alternative route for motorists will be clearly signposted. From Cwmbach roundabout proceed via Canal Road, Cwmbach Road, Abernant Road, Ynys roundabout, A4059, Tinneys corner roundabout, A4059 and Asda roundabout.
However, vehicles taller than 12ft must avoid the low bridge at Abernant Road. Therefore, from the route given above, proceed from Cwmbach Road to Wellington Street, Meirion Street roundabout, A4059, Depot roundabout, A4059, and re-join the route at Ynys roundabout.
For motorists travelling in the opposite direction, these two alternative routes can be taken in reverse order.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “Works to improve the A4059 at Cwmbach will soon begin, representing the latest investment to improve the Cynon Valley corridor, on which thousands of motorists rely each day. Projects to improve traffic flow have taken place recently at Cwmbach, Ynys roundabout, Asda roundabout and Mountain Ash.
“Meanwhile, significant improvement works on the A4059/Cwm Cynon Industrial Estate, as part of the Council’s flagship Mountain Ash Cross Valley Link Scheme, continue to make good progress. This part of the works, associated with the Cross Valley Link development, is due for completion in spring, and the scheme will widen the A4059 carriageway where it meets the industrial estate and introduce new lanes on this section of road to improve traffic flow.
“The works at Cwmbach will benefit road users in the long-term. However, there will be some disruption when the works are carried out, with a necessary road closure and a local diversion route for motorists through Robertstown
