Statement on Provisional Local Government Settlement

The Provisional Local Government Settlement, announced by the Welsh Government this afternoon, has indicated a -0.2% decrease in funding for Rhondda Cynon Taf for the next financial year.

Commenting on the Provisional Settlement, County Borough Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, said: “This is a reasonable settlement for local government and for Rhondda Cynon Taf against a backdrop of seven years of national austerity and the significant erosion of public sector funding in Wales.

“Considering Wales’ funding has reduced by 7% in real terms since 2010, equating to a staggering £1.2bn, in these challenging financial circumstances the Welsh Government has done its very best to mitigate the impact on Council services, and Rhondda Cynon Taf has received a fair and reasonable settlement.

“Alongside increasing cost pressures and rising demands, this reduction in funding means that the Council will once again need to consider how to address this budget challenge.

“We will continue our proactive approach, which means a continued focus on making efficiencies, by remodelling how we deliver services and investing in key areas to make valued services sustainable into the future.”
