Schools and social care: Welsh Govt told to ‘stop passing the buck’

Concerns have been raised over the future for schools and social care in Wales, after comments by the Welsh Local Government Association.

However, Welsh Conservatives say the “buck stops” with the Welsh Labour Government – who’ve been furnished with a fiscal framework, new tax powers and a protected block grant in recent years.

Shadow Local Government Secretary, Janet Finch-Saunders, believes that the Welsh Government now has the tools to do the job, and should take responsibility.

Responding to the comments, Mrs Finch-Saunders, said:

“The UK Government has delivered a fiscal framework that guarantees fair funding for Wales – something that 13 years of Labour rule at Westminster never achieved.

“It means that for every £1 spent in England, at least £1.20 will be spent in Wales.

“In fact, the biggest danger to schools and social care in Wales is the Welsh Government’s mismanagement of the public finances – with four in seven health boards set to require bailouts this year.

“With a protected block grant, the transfer of new tax raising powers, and a fair funding settlement, the buck has to stop with this Welsh Labour Government – propped up by Plaid Cymru.

“They have the tools to do the job and they must take responsibility.”
