Steel future statement: Wales will be ‘debilitated’ without steel
Commenting on the future of the steel industry in Wales, following a statement by the First Minister in the National Assembly for Wales, Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies AM said:
“The steel industry is vital to Wales, and the UK – and it is so important that we all work together to secure its long-term, viable future.
“We stand united with people across Wales impacted by Tata’s sale plans – and must do all we can for the steel communities of Port Talbot, Shotton, Llanwern and Trostre.
“I welcome the work the UK Government is undertaking to support the industry, and meet its needs – including action on energy costs, procurement and against unfair dumping.
“We need clear action in Wales too; and as part of this partnership approach, it is vital that the Welsh Government utilises the business rate tools at its disposal, and explores how infrastructure projects – such as the M4 Relief Road – can stimulate demand for Welsh steel, as the First Minister has acknowledged.
“Without steel, Wales, and the UK, will be debilitated. We must ensure potential purchases have the time and space to come forward, to protect jobs in our steel communities, support domestic steelmaking and deliver the long-term economic security of our nation.”
