Praise for staff as revised ambulance targets hit

Almost 70% of people with life-threatening illnesses or injuries received an emergency ambulance response within eight minutes during the first month of a year-long pilot of new response time targets, new figures published today show.

Welsh Conservatives have consistently opposed the transition to new targets, but today offered praise for hardworking ambulance staff after targets were met for the first time in two years.

Shadow Minister for Health, Darren Millar, said:

“I want to congratulate the Welsh Ambulance Service on managing to meet its performance targets in October.

"Whilst the targets are lower than those elsewhere in the UK this is a significant achievement and hardworking staff should be commended.

"But this must be set against a context of significant variation in performance across Wales and the fact that the services has failed to meet targets for the past two years.

“The answer to sustained improvement in performance does not lie in the Labour approach of scrapping targets and record breaking NHS budget cuts; instead we need to see extra investment in the Ambulance Service and our wider unscheduled care system."
