Lack of joined up thinking over rail network.
An evaluation report into the £5million spent on Pontypridd railway station has shown that as yet there has been little to no benefit from the project as planned service improvements elsewhere have not been implemented
The "turn back" project was financed partly by European money and partly by Welsh Government. As well as general station improvements it provided an extra platform at the station to enable trains to terminate there and in theory provide more services.
However as yet no extra services have been set up. This is because associated works on the Cardiff line have not been carried out.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly candidate for Pontypridd, Councillor Mike Powell says this shows a "distinct lack of joined up thinking."
"A significant amount of public money has gone into this project and many residents have been asking what has been achieved. Well as yet very little.
"Eventually it will hopefully lead to more trains running in and out of Pontypridd, which is to be welcomed. At the moment, however, because there has been no co-ordination in works taking place across the region there has been little benefit.
"The works to improve signaling and set up an extra platform at Cardiff Central are not scheduled to be finished until 2017 and so any real evaluation of the scheme cannot take place until then."
