We ask the question why 5 years on from the opening of Ysbyty Cwm Cynon in Mountain Ash is ward 5 unoccupied at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon in Mountain Ash when the Labour controlled Welsh NHS is short of beds?
During the planning stages of Ysbyty Cwm Cynon the space identified as ward 5 was originally earmarked for a new birthing unit, however, following a review of maternity services it was decided that the unit would be best located to Prince Charles Hospital. This decision was based on a review which concluded that that first time mothers have a high chance of needing to be transferred from Birth Centres during labour to an acute hospital.
The hospital was opened in the spring of 2012 and the space originally identified for the birthing unit still remains just an empty shell and requires plumbing, electrics and walls plastered etc in order for it to be occupied by services. This space will now form part of plans to facilitate the development a cluster hub for delivering more enhanced services and to support the transfer of services out of the acute hospitals. These plans involve independent contractors linking with secondary care consultants and wider multidisciplinary teams to deliver a broader range of out of hospital services.
We were informed that people sleeping rough occasionally use ward 5 in the nights when they have nowhere else to sleep.
Why was Michael Forey the Cynon Valley councilor who sat on the Cwm Taf University Health board as an independent member for years, why didn’t the councilor apply pressure get ward 5 open for the Cynon Valley patients?

Why is the Minor Injury Unit not open 24 hours and weekends why are Cynon Valley residents treated second-class?
Why hasn’t this Labour controlled Government and Labour controlled council provided no Minor Injury Unit 24 hours and weekends? Why should Cynon Valley residents travel to Prince Charles Hospital for basic treatment?
