Progress on City Deal shows UK Government is delivering for Wales

Speaking to business leaders in Cardiff today, the Chancellor will offer UK government support for a city deal in Cardiff that will transform the area as much as bay regeneration did a generation ago.

Welsh Conservatives have welcomed Mr Osborne’s challenge to “get on with it”, describing the news as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to transform the regional economy.

Shadow Minister for the Economy, William Graham, said:

“The Chancellor’s support for a Cardiff city deal is great news for the south east Wales economy.

“It’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and yet further evidence that the UK government is prioritising Wales and that Conservatives are delivering for communities right across the country.

“The Chancellor has today spoken of a ‘cocktail’ of economic risks facing the UK economy, and now more than ever we need a government that is willing to take the difficult decisions needed to safeguard our economic stability.

“We know that you can’t pay for a good health service and better schools without competent leadership and a strong economy, and we simply cannot afford to leave Wales’ future in the hands of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party.”

Mr Graham also said:

“If the city deal is to achieve its full potential then it must also be accompanied by improvements to transport infrastructure in the region.

“The UK Government’s commitment to the electrification of the main line to Swansea is hugely significant, but we must also see real progress from the Welsh Government on both the M4 relief road and the South Wales Metro schemes.”
