NHS Wales Award success for health board

Cwm Taf University Health Board is celebrating after winning an NHS Wales Award.
A study to look at early intervention to treat problems with jaw opening in some head and neck cancer patients won thePromoting Clinical Research and Application to Practice Award (supported by British Medical Association Cymru Wales).

Kerry Davies, specialist head and neck cancer speech and language therapist said: “Speech and language therapy is a relatively small allied health profession, but our input with patients can make a huge difference to both their communication and swallowing. These are two very important factors to most people’s quality of life.

“We know we make a difference and our patients think we do a good job.  Winning this award recognises that.

“It allows us to promote our role and the significant difference we can make to our patients. We hope it will also inspire more clinicians to venture into research so that we can contribute to the growing evidence base for the work we do.

“In Cwm Taf we have a very supportive and dynamic multi disciplinary team in head and neck cancer and without the team support we couldn’t have conducted the research.

“This award will hopefully give the Cwm Taf head and neck cancer multidisciplinary team the recognition and kudos it deserves.”

Cabinet Secretary for Health, Well-being and Sport, Vaughan Gething, who attended the ceremony, said, “The winners and nominees have made changes to improve the services they provide – but I know that across the NHS, other organisations will be taking notice of what they have achieved and seeing how they too can make improvements.

“These awards allow us to celebrate fantastic care and dedicated NHS staff and their partners, making a real difference for citizens across Wales every day.  I want to congratulate everyone who was nominated for their commitment to improving quality in our NHS.”
