New teaching block for Aberdare school now being constructed

A Council investment in improved facilities at St John Baptist Church in Wales High School, Aberdare, is now being delivered – as work to install a modern teaching block in time for the next academic year has now started.

The project is being delivered in partnership with Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, to build a single-storey, stand-alone teaching block on the current school site. The first-class facility will replace the previous temporary classrooms that the school had been using.

The new teaching block will include four classrooms, a multi-faith/community room and supporting spaces – along with six additional car park spaces for the school, that include EV charging points.

Initial set up works got underway during the October half term, with the main construction phase then starting from Monday, November 2.

The Council has appointed Knox & Wells as the contractor to deliver the scheme, which is anticipated to be completed by summer 2027 – in time for the 2027/28 academic year. Work will be carried out while causing minimal disruption to the school and the wider community over the months ahead.

Councillor Sharon Rees, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Young People, said: “I’m pleased that work has started to deliver this brand new teaching block for St John Baptist Church in Wales High School, to replace some temporary classrooms with modern, first-class facilities in a multi-million pound investment. We continue to welcome Welsh Government’s support for school investment across Rhondda Cynon Taf, as we deliver a joint £414 million funding commitment for the years ahead.

“The next tranche of projects encompassed by this funding includes Ysgol Cambrian in Clydach Vale – a brand new Additional Learning Needs school opening to pupils and staff imminently. That will be followed by Ysgol Gynradd Glyn-coch in February – another state-of-the-art school greatly improving the community’s existing provision. Future projects include new schools for Ysgol Cwm Rhondda in Cymer where enabling work is underway, and Ysgol Llanhari, along with a new teaching block for Ysgol Ty Coch’s satellite site at Buarth y Capel in Ynysybwl.

“The work now progressing at St John’s in Aberdare aims to make important progress over the months ahead, as we deliver the project next summer. The Council will work very closely with its appointed contractor to ensure there is minimal disruption to pupils’ learning, and to the wider local community. I’m looking forward to seeing the new teaching block taking shape, and to see how pupils and staff benefit from this excellent new asset to the school.
