PEOPLE AFFECTED BY CANCER IN WALES TO BENEFIT FROM NEW FINANCIAL WELLBEING PARTNERSHIP

Tenovus Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support have forged a new three-year partnership that will help people affected by cancer in Wales to get the financial, emotional and practical advice and support they so desperately need.

The UK-wide Money and More programme brings together 12 regional organisations funded by Macmillan Cancer Support to act as delivery leads, with  Tenovus Cancer Care leading the partnership in Wales.

Gareth Howells, Chief Executive of Tenovus Cancer Care, explained: “Welfare benefits advice plays a vital role in helping to ease financial pressures at an already difficult time for many people in the aftermath of a cancer diagnosis.

“This new partnership will mean we’re able to deliver an essential and crucial service for patients in Wales undergoing cancer treatment – supporting around 24,000 people over the next three years.

“This is an important opportunity to use our expert knowledge of welfare advice, to help people when they are at their most vulnerable. The benefits system can be complex to navigate and it is crucial people are helped as early as possible, that’s where our trained advisors come in to alleviate the financial stress.”

Rachel Burr, Head of Wales for Macmillan Cancer Support said: “At Macmillan, we know that cancer can disrupt your whole life. Which is why our Money & More programme is all about wrapping cancer advice, guidance and support around people affected by cancer, where and when they need it the most.

“Led by 12 community organisations across every area of the UK, these services bring together all the local partners needed to help people living with cancer to find advice and guidance on their finances, as well as all the other different pressures cancer might be creating in their lives.

“In launching this exciting new partnership with Tenovus Cancer Care, we aim to make cancer care that little bit better and fairer for us all – bringing support closer to home for some of the most vulnerable people living with cancer in Wales.

If you need help, please do get in touch.”

Providing benefits and welfare advice has been a cornerstone of Tenovus Cancer Care’s work, which provides holistic life-changing support to anyone in Wales, during and after cancer.

And since its early days when the charity first started in 1943, it has been powered by the needs of communities in Wales, responding to the increasing demand for cancer support services for thousands of individuals and families.

Macmillan Cancer Support also has a long history of funding advice services right across Wales and the wider UK. Money & More Cymru is a new model of care which focuses on a central triage pool where people’s needs are assessed so that they can receive the most targeted advice.

The new initiative places an emphasis on supporting the most in need in our communities.

Helen Powell, Head of Support Services for Tenovus Cancer Care, added: “This is an exciting opportunity to work in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support over the next three years where we can bring our own expertise and experience of providing holistic advice to people affected by cancer.

“We know that money worries are a key concern for people when diagnosed with cancer. Previous research by Macmillan showed four in five people with cancer in the UK (83%) experience a financial impact from their diagnosis, which for those affected reaches more than £1,000 a month on average*.

Tenovus Cancer Care has developed strong relationships to support people affected by cancer through coordinated referral and support pathways. It has a strong history of working collaboratively across the advice sector.

Our benefits advisors provide help and support to those affected by cancer in claiming a range of benefits such as Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and Carer’s Allowance as well as help identifying one-off grants, advice on support with energy costs and home adaptations as well as housing costs, rent and transport.
