Three communities, hundreds invited and one giant heart of pink light for NHS Organ Donation Week
With just 48 hours to go, people across South Wales are being invited to grab something pink, pick up a light and help create an unforgettable sight on the Garth this Saturday.
Turn The Garth Pink takes place on Saturday 26 September, when walkers will make their way up the Garth at dusk from Efail Isaf, Gwaelod-Y-Garth and Pentyrch.
Carrying pink-lit torches, head torches and fairy lights, the three groups will create streams of pink light across the hillside before converging at the summit.
Then comes the moment everyone is working towards.
Together, the walkers will attempt to create a giant illuminated pink heart around the iconic white Garth trig point for NHS Organ Donation Week.
Organiser Carolyn Frater-Thomas, founder of One’s Enough, said:
“It’s nearly here, and now we just need people to come and be one of the lights.
“Imagine looking across at the Garth and seeing pink lights making their way up from different directions, before everyone comes together at the top to create one enormous glowing heart.
“You don’t need anything special. Wear something pink, bring a torch or some fairy lights, bring your family and friends – and bring the dog! The more people who join us, the bigger our heart becomes.”
The evening will have a strong community atmosphere before the walking even begins. The Carpenters Arms in Efail Isaf will host a male voice choir, Welsh folk singalong and pizza truck, with people encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the build-up.
Pink filters and tape will also be available at participating venues to help turn ordinary torches and head torches pink.
For Carolyn, whose own family experience after her son Dan became critically ill inspired her to raise awareness of organ donation, the evening has one simple purpose.
“We want people to have a brilliant evening, but we also want them to go home talking about organ donation.
“One conversation with the people you love could one day make an enormous difference.”
MEDIA INVITATION
TV crews, radio, photographers and journalists are warmly invited to attend Turn The Garth Pink on Saturday evening.
There will be opportunities to capture walkers gathering and preparing their pink lights, community entertainment, streams of illuminated walkers climbing the Garth and, at the summit, the formation of the giant pink heart around the trig point.
Carolyn is available for TV, radio and press interviews ahead of the event and on Saturday evening.
Walkers will approach the summit from:
The Carpenters Arms – Efail Isaf
Gwaelod-Y-Garth Inn – Gwaelod-Y-Garth
The Green by the Lewis Arms – Pentyrch
Everyone is welcome to take part. Participants are encouraged to wear something pink and bring a suitable light. Parking around the starting locations may be limited, so people are encouraged to arrive early.
