Dear Sir,
I am writing on behalf of the Friends of Aberffrwd Cemetery, a group established in 2025 to protect the future of this historically important cemetery in Mountain Ash. The cemetery holds the remains of the First Baron Aberdare, Henry Austion Bruce who served as the Home Secretary of the United Kingdom from 1868-1873. The second and third Barons Aberdare are also there in the family plot.
However, the reason for my email today is to draw your attention to an event we are holding on Saturday 28th November at 12 noon. We will be unveiling a blue plaque in honor of Mountain Ash born Philip Henry Burton at number 9 Arnold Street. Philip has been on the news a lot recently thanks to the film, Mr. Burton. The ashes of Philip lay with his parents behind the locked gates of Aberffrwd Cemetery which, soon we hope to be able to transform into a safe and welcoming area for all the community.
Our blue plaque unveiling follows the unveiling of a plaque in Port Talbot last year marking the house where Philip and his adopted son Richard lived. We will be having a short unveiling ceremony, with a few short speeches and drinks at a local pub afterwards.
We would like to invite your organisation to cover this important event and look forward to seeing you there.
All the very best,
Geraint Lewis (Secretary, Friends of Aberffrwd Cemetery)
