Hi, I’m Hannah Evans, a 25-year-old mum of four and independent children’s author from Aberdare, South Wales.
I wanted to get in touch to see whether my story might be something you would be interested in covering.
I’ve recently released my second children’s book, Before Our Rainbow, which I created after drawing on my own experience of baby loss and recognising how little support there seems to be specifically for children going through it.
The book gently explores baby loss, grief, love and hope and is designed to give children a way to understand what has happened and express some of the feelings they may be experiencing.
The story is based on my own experience. I lost a baby before going on to have my rainbow baby, which is reflected at the end of the book. I’m very conscious that this isn’t everyone’s experience of baby loss and I would never want the book to suggest that it is. Families all have completely different journeys. I simply wanted to share my own experience while creating something that could help other children who are trying to understand the loss of a baby.
I’m completely self published and have funded the entire project myself. This is my second book, following The Boy Who Wore an Invisible Costume, which was inspired by my own family and our experiences with autism and invisible disabilities. My first book sold out its initial batch within a few days and encouraged me to continue creating books around subjects that can be difficult for families to talk about.
With Before Our Rainbow, I’ve also included a keepsake booklet, letter to baby activity, parent note and Forget me not seeds so that children have something practical alongside the story to help them remember and express their feelings.
I’d love to raise awareness of the lack of resources specifically aimed at children experiencing baby loss and hopefully reach families, schools and organisations who may benefit from the book.
