The initial traffic management needed for the main demolition phase of the Pontypridd Police Station and Berw Road Car Park buildings from August 3 has been confirmed. A one-way system is needed at Morgan Street, on the pictured section near the bus station. Traffic will still be able to enter this road in the usual way from the main road, with access to the bus station and Goods Yard Car Park being maintained.
Last week, the Council announced arrangements for the permanent closure of Berw Road Car Park, at the end of the day on Thursday, July 30. It follows the recent announcement with South Wales Police, confirming the next steps for policing in Pontypridd which includes the closure and transfer of the former Berw Road building to the Council. These plans include a new, visible and accessible town centre base for the police at Taff Street, to open soon.
Meanwhile the Council is developing and exploring a mixed-use development that will utilise both the former police station and car park sites. The possible options range from an improved public space, a modern replacement car park, better walking and cycling links, junction improvements at Bridge Street, and opportunities for new residential, commercial and cultural uses.
The Council has appointed Prichard’s as the contractor to demolish the two buildings, with this major phase of work starting on Monday, August 3. The overall demolition is expected to be completed in the early part of 2027. During the first six weeks on site, activities will include establishing a site compound, undertaking specialist surveys and removal work, internal pre- works, installing scaffolding, and then starting the building demolition.
The central location of the overall site, plus its close proximity to the road network and bus station, presents a significant challenge to carry out works safely – while minimising disruption for road users, residents and businesses.
The demolition phase is being supported through Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme.
Traffic management for the demolition phase from August 3
Officers have been working very closely with the contractor to bring forward traffic management options – considering several factors like accommodating the workforce and machinery, and the installation of scaffolding at the work area. From August 3, the following temporary measure will be put in place, which is expected to remain in place for the entire demolition works:
- A section of Morgan Street (alongside Pontypridd Bus Station) will become a one-way road – from its junction with the A4223 for a distance of around 80 metres. This means that traffic from the main road will still be able to turn onto Morgan Street and access the bus station in the usual way. Vehicles accessing this road from the northern end of Morgan Street will need to take a short detour around the bus station via Chapel Street, to join the main road. The one-way area and alternative route are highlighted on the following map. The footway next to the police station and car park will also be closed, with alternative routes for pedestrians being clearly signposted.
Additional short-duration traffic management needed in the weeks ahead
Please note, further traffic management will be needed at Berw Road (near the pharmacy and medical centre) and Bridge Street (at the front of the police station). These will be short in duration, running one after another, to install scaffolding to the building. They will both need traffic management on or near Berw Road junction and will inevitably cause local traffic disruption.
The Council is working with Prichard’s to complete the arrangements, which will be communicated to the public soon. Work is anticipated later in August 2026, but it is currently being developed and the dates are not yet finalised.
The work is being coordinated with the upcoming scheme to carry out localised repairs to Berw Road Bridge (White Bridge). White Bridge will be open when there is traffic management in place affecting Berw Road.
