Letter to the Editor, sent on behalf of Ansley Workman, Director of RNIB Cymru:

Here at RNIB Cymru we want to remind your readers not to forget to wear their sunglasses while they enjoy the sunshine.

Now, you might be wondering why Wales’ leading sight loss charity is giving you fashion advice. But, wearing the right pair of sunglasses is so much more than a style statement, for people of all ages.

Just like your sun cream protects your skin, your sunglasses are essential for protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Harmful UV rays from the sun may increase your risk of some eye conditions such as cataracts.

This is why we’re asking your readers to make sure they keep their sunglasses on this summer.

When you’re investing in a new pair of sunglasses, check they have quality marks to show they offer the best protection. Check for the CE, UKCA, UV400 or British Standard quality marks. This means they have adequate protection from harmful UV light. You can find this information printed on the inside of the arms of sunglasses.

It is also important to remember that sunglasses don’t have to be expensive to protect your eyes. A cheap pair of sunglasses with the right UV protection is better than an expensive or designer pair of sunglasses without.

So don’t forget your sunnies this summer.

Regards,

Ansley Workman

Director of RNIB Cymru
