Commenting on reports surrounding patient safety concerns at the Royal Gwent Hospital, the Welsh Conservatives have criticised the health board and their handling of the incident.

The hospital breached its duty of care to a patient when one of its physician associates (PAs) carried out a lumbar puncture on her, a health board has admitted. British Medical Association (BMA) guidance states PAs should never perform lumbar punctures.

Commenting, local Welsh Conservative Member of the Senedd for Newport and Islwyn, Natasha Asghar MS, said:

“The details emerging from this case are deeply concerning and will understandably alarm patients and families across Wales.

“Any patient undergoing an invasive medical procedure should have complete confidence that appropriate safeguards, professional standards and clinical guidance are being followed at all times.

“Patients and their families deserve transparency, accountability and reassurance. Lessons must be learned and the new Welsh Government must ensure nobody else suffers because of negligence.”
