Reform’s Jason O’Connell has called on the Welsh Government to pause international nurse recruitment after it recruited around 200 nurses from India last year, warning that newly qualified nurses across the Valleys are now struggling to secure work.
The call comes as the Royal College of Nursing Cymru warned that a shortage of jobs means as many as half of all new nursing graduates in Wales could be left without work after completing their training.
O’Connell said the issue is particularly concerning for students training locally, including at the University of South Wales’ Pontypridd campus, many of whom expect clear pathways into NHS jobs after completing demanding degrees.
Jason stated:
“Nursing students across the Valleys feel they have been mis-sold their degrees after years of hard work and training.”
“Graduates from our Welsh valleys should not be left without jobs while international recruitment continues.”
“The Welsh Government must pause overseas recruitment and give our own nursing graduates the opportunities they were promised.”
