Parents and Pupils to Attend Senedd as School Transport Petition Is Debated

Parents, children, and campaigners from Rhondda Cynon Taf and across Wales will travel to the Senedd on Wednesday 14 January 2026, as a major petition on learner travel is formally debated by the Welsh Parliament.

The petition, which calls for a full restructure of the Learner Travel Measure, seeks improved access to education and the introduction of more affordable—or potentially free—school and college transport for learners across Wales. Campaigners argue that current arrangements create barriers for many families, particularly in rural and post-industrial communities.

Supporters of the campaign will gather at the Senedd for what organisers have described as a peaceful protest, with parents and children attending to show the real-life impact of current transport policies. The demonstration will include families not only from RCT but from several other areas of Wales.

The debate comes amid growing concern that the Welsh Government’s £1 learner travel scheme, currently operating as a pilot, is due to end in August 2026. Campaigners say there are no clear commitments from any political party to continue the support beyond that date, raising fears that learners could once again face financial and logistical barriers to education.

The Senedd plenary session is scheduled to begin at 1pm, with petitioners Tina Collins and Rebecca Smart, along with members of the Save the School Transport campaign, attending and observing proceedings from the public gallery.

Campaigners hope the debate will prompt the Welsh Government to back meaningful reform and deliver a long-term solution that guarantees fair and accessible transport for all learners.
