Labour’s funding announcement fails to deliver for Wales

Responding to Labour’s spending review, which includes £445 million for rail spending for Wales, the Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport points out that this figure is far from the generous investment Labour claims.

During Control Periods 5 and 6, the UK Government invested £750 million and £350 million in Welsh rail infrastructure, respectively—figures that easily surpass the £445 million reportedly being announced, with no time frame on the investment given. Additionally, the previous UK Conservative Government funded half of the South Wales Metro through the Growth Deal, a contribution Labour in Wales continues to take sole credit for.

Commenting on the announcement, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure, Sam Rowlands MS, said:
“While any investment in Wales is welcome, it is disingenuous for Labour to frame this announcement as ‘generous’ when previous UK Conservative Government contributions far exceeded these figures.

We were promised two Governments on either side of the M4 working together for the benefit of Wales, but instead, we have seen broken promises and a reluctance to provide Wales with its fair share of funding.

“Welsh Labour cannot rewrite history— the Conservatives have consistently delivered for Wales, and this announcement falls short of what was done by the previous UK Conservative Government.”
