The rugby first team at Penywaun’s Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun Comprehensive School is sporting new kit after local energy company, Pennant Walters, lent a helping hand to sponsor and support the side.
The school, which has always had a strong sporting setup, is proud of its rugby roots and is delighted that Pennant Walters has sponsored kit for the 25-strong squad.
The funding from Pennant Walters is linked to its 9 turbine 22 MW Mynydd Bwllfa windfarm near Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf, which became operational in summer 2015. It builds on previous donations which have seen the company provide money to support various local community groups.
Ceri Type, Teacher and Director of Rugby at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun Comprehensive School, said:
“As a school, we are renowned for sport, particularly rugby, with many of our players going on to represent at regional Welsh level and we are always looking for opportunities for our teams to compete on a bigger stage.
“It’s no surprise that school funds are stretched so to have the support of Pennant Walters at this time is fantastic and we’ve been able to provide a first team kit for all our boys. This means that we can put our budget into providing further opportunities for our players to benefit their game and schooling experience.”
The school is proud of its recent success with former students Ben Coomer and Bailey Cutts currently playing for Wales U18 side in France. Both have played against Ireland and Georgia, with the side winning both games.
Pennant Walters managing director, Dale Hart, said:
“We are proud to continue our partnership with Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun and it’s evident that this support benefits so many of the young players.
“Our wind energy project community funds exist to make a difference to the local communities in which we work – benefitting people directly and it’s evident this money has done just this. We look forward to following the team’s journey, and hopefully their success.”
Ceri added: “Our boys are proud to wear the Pennant Walters name on their kit and we hope to do them proud as we continue to play future games. On behalf of the boys, and their families, I’d like to say a huge thank you.”
