Arrest under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act

On Tuesday April 8, 2025, following intelligence suggesting the involvement of several dogs in the commission of an offence under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act (which makes it illegal to cause unnecessary suffering to a protected animal), warrants were executed at three separate addresses in Merthyr. The operation was carried out in collaboration with the #RSPCA.

As a result of the raid, 18 dogs, each in varying conditions, were seized for further investigation. Additionally, a 27 year old man was arrested for various offences which are being investigated by South Wales Police and the #RSPCA.

This successful operation highlights the continued commitment of South Wales Police and animal welfare organisations to ensure the protection of animals from cruelty and mistreatment. We hope that even though these dogs were taken from the only homes they knew, they will now have a future where they are loved, safe, and free from harm.
