Thousands wasted on ‘woke’ exhibits at Cardiff museum despite cash crisis

Cash-strapped Cardiff Museum has splashed thousands of pounds on politically charged ‘woke’ exhibits instead of focusing on its core mission of preserving Welsh heritage, a Freedom of Information request by the Welsh Conservative Party has revealed.

Among the most shocking revelations is that £5,000 of taxpayer money which consisted of a scrunched-up newspaper on the floor with the headline “Don’t trust the Tories”. Gareth Davies MS,  the Conservative Culture spokesman in Wales has slammed the display as an unacceptable use of public funds, arguing that museums should remain politically neutral rather than promoting anti-Conservative rhetoric.

The revelations don’t stop there. The museum also wasted £560 on paper Extinction Rebellion posters—items that many argue could be found littering the streets for free.  The spending comes at a time when Amgueddfa Cymru—set to receive £34 million in funding from the Welsh Government in the upcoming budget—is pleading poverty. Many will now question whether the institution can be trusted to manage public money responsibly.

Hitting out at the spending, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and Sports, Gareth Davies MS, said:

“This is a blatant waste of public money. If this level of waste has been uncovered here, how much more has been squandered across Amgueddfa Cymru? The museum needs to get its finances in order and focus on what truly matters—protecting our national heritage, not pushing a political agenda.

“Taxpayers will no doubt be asking why, at a time of financial strain, Cardiff Museum has chosen to squander resources on controversial exhibits rather than prioritising essential maintenance and preservation.”
