Labour’s wasteful spending on seemingly empty Welsh Government office

It has been revealed through a Freedom of Information request, highlighted by the Waste Watch Wales Twitter site, that a Welsh Government building in Merthyr Tydfil, that is often virtually empty, is costing the Welsh taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds in utility costs, catering costs and business rates.

The Welsh Conservatives have criticised the Labour Welsh Government for its extravagant spending on its Merthyr Tydfil office, which cost taxpayers a staggering £708,871 in total for the last financial year – an eye-watering amount amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and cuts to vital public services.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Housing & Local Government, Laura Anne Jones MS, said:

“Families across Wales are having to come to terms with further increases to their water, council tax and energy bills – and pensioners are going cold this winter. Meanwhile, Labour is spending nearly three quarters of a million pounds on utilities for just one office.

“Labour is wasting hundreds of thousands of pounds on one seemingly empty office while our Welsh NHS, our schools, and our frontline services are starved of the funding they so desperately need.

“The cost of running this apparently empty yet plush office for civil servants is a ridiculous waste of taxpayers’ money, how many more government buildings are operating like this across Wales?”
