Welsh Conservatives call for OBR to carry out an analysis of the Welsh Government budget

The Welsh Conservative Shadow Finance Minister has written to the Labour Finance Minister, Rebecca Evans and the Chairman of the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR), Richard Hughes to call for the independent fiscal watchdog to provide an economic and fiscal outlook for Wales ahead of the Welsh Government budget.

Labour minister: ‘We don’t know what we’re doing on the economy’

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Shadow Finance Minister, Peter Fox MS said:

“I have written to the Finance Minister to call on the Labour Welsh Government to follow the UK Conservative Government in taking advantage of the OBR’s economic and fiscal analysis, so that the £800 million Welsh budget deficit seen last year is not repeated again.

“The Labour Welsh Government have not pursued ambitious enough economic and fiscal targets to support the funding of Wales’ public services, in particular our struggling Welsh NHS which despite additional resource funding is still facing a real terms cut this year.

“The Labour Government have been marking their own homework for too long, leaving Wales worse off as pet projects are pursued over core services. We need more independent analysis, we need the OBR to step in.”

The Welsh Conservative letter calls for a new Memorandum of Understanding to encompass a wider economic and fiscal outlook for Wales based on the Welsh Government’s budget.
