Lawyers against justice devolution
Mark Isherwood MS, Welsh Conservative Shadow Counsel General, challenged the Counsel General Mick Antoniw over Labour’s plans for the devolution of justice and policing during his spokespersons’ questions.
Commenting Mark Isherwood MS said:
“Labour, with the help of their nationalist lapdog Plaid Cymru, has become dogmatic in attempting to pull Wales out of the world’s most respected legal jurisdiction for commercial contracts and business relationships.
“I raised concerns with the Minister regarding the opinions expressed by senior barristers and King’s Counsel who have conveyed to me that justice devolution would only ‘create mountains of work for lawyers, and the losers would be everyone else’. Devolution of justice would provide a wealth of problems.
“The Anglo-Welsh border is completely porous, people living on the border would find their daily lives subject to two sets of laws. The current constitutional arrangement benefits Wales immensely by helping maintain a legal system shared between two completely intertwined nations, whilst enabling Wales-only and England-only legislation on devolved matters. Loading Wales with more bureaucracy would only be to our detriment.”
