Deaths involving Covid pass 11,000 mark in Wales

Following news that the number of people who have died of reasons involving Covid in Wales has surpassed 11,000, Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister Russell George MS said:

“It is tragic that coronavirus continues to take a toll on our society with every one of those 11,000 being an individual who leaves behind family and friends who cared for them and will miss them.

“To ensure that we limit the spread of viruses like this in future and get the answers people deserve into the handling of the pandemic, we need to look close to home which is why the Wales-specific inquiry Labour is currently blocking is so badly needed.

“This news will only compound the anger that Wales has the highest Covid-death rate of all UK nations, with a quarter of deaths coming from hospital-acquired infections, and Wales having a higher hospitalisation rate than England too.

“The devastation will only be eased when Wales gets the answers it needs, and I fear that this will not happen until Mark Drakeford relents and gives us that essential Welsh inquiry.”

The news came after Leader of the Opposition Andrew RT Davies MS challenged Mark Drakeford in FMQs today over his refusal to hold a Wales-specific Covid inquiry, as called for by the Welsh Conservatives and the bereaved families group.

The questioning was sparked by the UK-wide investigation’s chair, Baroness Hallett, saying the inquiry could not cover every issue regarding Wales’ Covid response.
