Calls for a Wales-specific Covid inquiry

The UK Government has already committed to holding a UK-wide inquiry, but so far Labour ministers in Cardiff Bay have refused to commit to hold a Welsh inquiry to examine decisions taken at a devolved level.

Throughout the pandemic, Labour ministers insisted on taking different decisions but when it comes to scrutiny and accountability, they want Wales consigned to a chapter in a mammoth UK-wide inquiry.

Commenting, Welsh Conservative Leader in the Senedd, Andrew RT Davies MS said:

“Welsh Conservatives have been clear from the outset that there should be a separate UK and Wales inquiry into the pandemic, but Labour ministers in Cardiff Bay have been strangely keen to shut this prospect down.

“Different decisions made in Wales – both good and bad – had a direct impact on lives in Wales, and anything less than an independent inquiry would be completely unacceptable.

“Tragically, Wales has the highest death rate in the UK and the thousands of families who have lost loved ones deserve answers, and the apparatus of government must also learn lessons, so we are fully prepared in the future.

“The Welsh Labour Government cannot pick and choose when they want power and the scrutiny that comes with the responsibility of power and Wales should not be reduced to a chapter or footnote in a UK inquiry.”
