RCT Council announces extended period of event cancellations

As the coronavirus situation continues, the Council has taken the decision to further extend the cancellation period for all Authority-run events until at least the end of 2020.

In April, the Council announced that all events up until and including the month of September were to be cancelled due to the restrictions in place and the level of preparation and organisation required to hold such events. Given the Welsh Government’s introduction of local restrictions currently in place for the whole of Rhondda Cynon Taf and the forecasts that the winter months will likely see an increase in prevalence of the virus, the Council has once again taken this decision.

The autumn/winter period usually sees a number of events being held, including the Halloween Spooktacular and the Festival of Remembrance, however both of these will not be going ahead. The Council has also recently received guidance from the Welsh Government on commemorations for Remembrance Day and advice for residents wishing to celebrate the event will be communicated as soon as possible.

In addition, this extension unfortunately means that the annual Christmas town centre events will not go ahead, again due to the restrictions on public gatherings and the requirement to maintain social distancing.

The Council is, however, committed to ensuring that the festive period proceeds with some normality, and the budget allocated to hosting the events will instead help to support improved decorations and displays in the County Borough’s principal town centres. Details for the annual Santa’s Toy Mine event will also be communicated shortly, as a number of staff at the Welsh Mining Experience have been deployed to support the Test, Trace, Protect programme.

Earlier this month, the Council and the Nos Galan Committee also jointly announced that the hugely popular annual event will be ‘going virtual’ for the 2020 edition, and further details and the link to register can be found at the Nos Galan Website

While Rhondda Cynon Taf is currently under enhanced local restrictions from the Welsh Government, residents can still access all of the beautiful outdoor locations across the County – including the Dare Valley Country Park, Penpych Mountain, Aberdare Park, Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, and Barry Sidings Country Park.
