Local company R&M Williams Appointed for Construction of Robertstown Business Units

The Council is pleased to confirm that R&M Williams have been appointed as the contractors to deliver the almost £4m development of 20 commercial industrial units near Wellington Street in Robertstown, Aberdare.

Site preparation for the main construction phase will commence on Monday, 24th August, with site accommodation and welfare units being established, alongside the setting up of site hoardings.

The commercial industrial units will be built on the land off Wellington Street, which has been unused and overgrown for many years. Site clearance took place at the beginning of 2020 – and included site setup, tree cutting and chipping, and vegetation removal.

The area has been identified as a key employment site in the Local Development Plan and the project will deliver sustainable economic growth and jobs, helping to build a thriving and prosperous economy.

In 2018, the Council secured £2.58m from the European Regional Development Fund, through the Welsh Government, which was then complemented by additional #RCTInvest funding to contribute towards a total £3.93m investment package.

Through the Welsh Government, the Council also secured an additional £2.58m to progress a similar scheme at Coed Ely in Tonyrefail via the European Regional Development Fund, where work is continuing following its commencement in November 2019.

Councillor Robert Bevan, Cabinet Member for Enterprise Development and Housing, said:

“I’m pleased to confirm that R&M Williams have been appointed as the Council’s contractor to deliver this important scheme in the Robertstown area of Aberdare, which has the significant potential to create a number of local jobs and increase prosperity.

“The scheme in Robertstown has long been an aspiration for this Council, and its delivery will bring much-needed modern business accommodation to this part of the Cynon Valley. I’m looking forward to working with R&M Williams and seeing this scheme continue to progress through the main construction phase as we work towards a completion date of late 2021.”

All work on-site will be carried out under the latest industry guidelines relating to Covid-19, and will minimise disruption to residents wherever possible.  The contractors will shortly be writing to local residents with further information on the scheme.
