Culvert repair scheme to begin at two streets in Pentre

The Council will shortly deliver an important culvert repair scheme at two streets in Pentre, to help alleviate the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.

From Monday, February 17, the scheme along Tudor Road and Belgrave Street will get underway – in order to realign the ordinary watercourse network, improve the inlet structure and reconstruct a manhole within the highway. The Council has appointed Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd as the contractor responsible for delivering this scheme, which will be completed by the end of March 2020.

The scheme is anticipated to be completed with minimal disruption to the local community – however, the contractor has advised that temporary traffic lights will be required for a small duration of the works, along Belgrave Street.

The Council has benefitted from a contribution towards the funding from Welsh Government, awarded in 2019/20, to cover 85% of the construction costs of this local scheme.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways, said: “This scheme in Pentre is the latest of many flood alleviation schemes carried out in 2019/20, as the Council prioritises reducing the chances of flooding in areas considered at risk. A £550,000 investment for Flood Drainage and Risk Management was included within our £25.9m Capital Programme for the current financial year.

“The Council welcomed a significant funding contribution from Welsh Government for the upcoming scheme in Pentre – and will continue to pursue external funding opportunities to complement our own investment for local schemes, through #RCTinvest.

“A number of flood alleviation schemes which started before Christmas have recently been completed, including new highway culverts installed at the A4061 Rhigos Road, drainage works at Maesyffynnon Lane/Cardiff Road in Aberdare, and culvert repairs in Cardiff Road/Dyffryn Road in Rhydyfelin. A further ongoing culvert repair scheme at Duke Street/New Park Terrace in Treforest will also be completed very shortly.

“The upcoming work in Pentre will be completed by the end of March 2020, and is anticipated to have minimal disruption to local residents and road users – with temporary traffic lights scheduled for a small part of the scheme.”
