£600,000 investment to deliver improvements to 14 play areas
The labour council have £600,000 to upgrade play areas but the labour council will not reinstate the play area they removed in the Ynys Aberdare to construct the £50 million plus new school and £3 million athletics facility WHY?
A further 14 play areas across Rhondda Cynon Taf will be improved and upgraded over the course of the 2019/20 financial year, after the Council released details of the facilities to benefit from the next tranche of investment.
Since 2015, the Council’s £3.2m investment, delivered through the #RCTInvest capital programme, has seen 97 children’s play areas undergo improvement works, representing just under half of the total stock. This next round of £600,000 funding will support the delivery of an additional 14 schemes, meaning the total investment will stand at £3.8m by the end of this financial year and 111 facilities will have been improved.
It is the Council’s ambition to ensure that every child has access to good quality equipment, in recognition of the important role that outdoor play has in not only inspiring the imagination of children, but also providing quality time for parents and the family at no cost.
The schemes for improvement in the 2019/20 financial year are detailed below:
Rhondda area
- Institute Road – Llwynypia
- Brookfield Seniors – Maerdy
- Brookfield Juniors – Maerdy
- Hendrecafn – Pen-Y-Graig
- Wattstown Park – Ynyshir
Cynon area
- Bronallt Terrace – Aberaman South
- Tynte Play Area (Bryncynon) – Abercynon
- Aberdare Park – Aberdare West
- Ty Fry – Aberdare East
- Pentwyn Court – Pen-Y-Waun
- Albany/Arthur Street – Penrhiwceiber
Taf area
- Ilan – Rhydyfelin Central
- Dinas Isaf – Tonyrefail West
- Meadow Street – Treforest

“We have made a firm commitment to continue investing in our outdoor play facilities and this round of investment now takes our programme of improvements into a fifth consecutive year, meaning increasingly more children and their families will have access to high-quality play facilities.
“By the end of the financial year, over 110 of our play areas right across the length and breadth of RCT will have benefited from the Council’s investment, and I look forward to seeing the programme progress throughout the year in giving even more children opportunities to benefit from healthy outdoor play activities.”
